Itinerary:

Carpool departure at 9:45 am.

Let's go for a 2 mile leisurely hike at Dellinger Park and visit the Booth Western Art Museum in Cartersville.

We will walk the outer loop of the park.  After our walk we will drive 3 miles to the museum in downtown Cartersville and purchase our tickets.  The tickets are $10 but we have a coupon for a $2 discount per ticket.  Please thank Bobby Marie for the coupons the next time you see him.  The cafe in the museum will be closed during our visit in preparation for the Gala that evening.  Swheat Market Deli is 2 blocks from the museum and we will walk to lunch as a group or when you get hungry.

At 1:30 pm there will be a 60 minute guided tour by a Docent. The Docent will guide us on a highlights tour of the permanent exhibits & then we will have an additional half-hour for revisits to galleries the Docent may have just hit on, temporary exhibits or to the Store, etc.  If you choose not to go on the tour you may just explore the museum during this time.  The tour should be finished by 2:30 pm.  We will  head back to Atlanta at 3:00 pm and plan to be back to the car pool at 4:00 pm.

Dellinger Park, 100 Pine Grove Road, Cartersville, consists of 111 acres  and is the location of the main office for the Cartersville Parks and Recreation Department.  We will hike the outter loop trail for 2.1 miles.

The Booth Western Art Museum houses the largest permanent exhibition space for Western art in the United States and is the second largest art museum in Georgia. Additional accolades include being a Smithsonian Institution Affiliate and inclusion in the Museums West consortium. The 120,000 square foot museum allows visitors to See America's Story through Contemporary Western art, Civil War art, more than 200 Native American artifacts and a Presidential Gallery,

With an emphasis on Western artwork, much of the museum depicts Western culture as seen through the eyes of artists from the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries. Visitors viewing paintings and sculpture in the Enduring Traditions gallery experience a 100 year overview of early Western art with examples of work by George Catlin, Charles M. Russell, Frederic Remington and more. This historic overview provides the perfect jumping off point to explore the museum's premier collection of work by living artists including Howard Terpning, Ken Riley, Martin Grelie and others, as well as contemporary trendsetters Thom Ross, Nelson Boren, Billy Scheck, Donna Howell-Sickles, and many more.

A two-story sculpture court, two authentic stage coaches, and more than 200 Native American artifacts round out the story of the historic American West.

Cameras are welcome at Booth Western Art Museum for private, non commercial use only. Photography is not permitted in special exhibitions or areas designated as “No Photography.” Flashes, video cameras, monopods and tripods are prohibited. Photographs cannot be published, sold, reproduced, transferred, distributed, or otherwise commercially exploited in any manner whatsoever.

There are many exhibits.  Here are a few you will see:

National Geographic Greatest Photographs of the American West Exhibition
Booth Western Art Museum is one of 10 museums nationwide to host simultaneously the National Geographic Greatest Photographs of the American West exhibition.  This includes approximately 75 photos and the exhibit spans over 125 years of Western history.   National Geographic Greatest Photographs of the American West illustrates the extremes to which photographers push themselves to achieve original photographs. The oldest image in the exhibition is an 1873 stereographic image of Colorado’s Mountain of the Holy Cross by William Henry Jackson, shot after hauling hundreds of pounds of photography equipment up the 1500-foot ascent. Other photographers in the exhibit have endured similar hardships, from dangerous aerial maneuvers to simply hours and hours of waiting for the right moment to shoot.

While capturing extreme perspectives of the West, these photographs also create an accurate and compelling pictorial history of Western expansion, including Native American culture and conservation efforts. A National Geographic Greatest Photographs of the American West companion book, featuring 125 photographs that have been rarely or never published before, will be on sale at the Booth Museum store.

The Cowboy Gallery
The cowboy is one of the great heroic figures in American history.  His heyday lasted less than 30 years, but cowboys and cowgirls did not suddenly disappear when the West was fenced.  They continue to be an important part of Western culture as well as a compelling and picturesque subject for artists.  This gallery showcases the cowboy at work, rest and play in more than 35 paintings and sculptures.

Heading West – Here you will see an authentic stagecoach
Artwork in this gallery depicts some of the earliest people to head West – fur trappers and mountain men – as well as the stagecoaches and covered wagons that foll
owed those same trails West in search of new opportunity.

Civil War Gallery
The American Civil War was the greatest conflict in our nation’s history. In just four years, over three million men fought in over 10,000 places across the country and more than 600,000 died.

This tragic war has been a subject for artists since the first shots were fired at Fort Sumter in April 1861. Today artists such as Don Troiani, Mort Künstler, Rick Reeves, David Wright, J.N. Muir, and Brad Schmell continue to portray the war’s defining moments in stunning paintings and sculpture. They depict the heroism, glory and tragedy of this struggle of brother against brother.

The paintings hang in chronological order to help us understand the battles as they occurred.

Presidential Gallery
Since the birth of our nation, forty-three men have been selected to serve as President of the United States. While their names have been memorized and their accomplishments recited for years, we often forget that these men had the same hopes, fears, loves, dreams and passions that we all share.

Much of our knowledge of these remarkable leaders can be found in letters they sent to their opponents, acquaintances and family members. In these letters, we obtain a glimpse of American history from a truly unique perspective. We are able to see these men as they were. From the compassion of Abraham Lincoln to the playful correspondence of John F. Kennedy, these letters help to humanize the men we have chosen to lead our country.

Booth Western Art Museum has in its collection a one-page, signed letter from each President. The original letters are on exhibit, along with portrait photographs of each president and a variety of presidential memorabilia.
