Itinerary:

This is my first solo lead with the AOC and I figure it's fitting to do the AT, since it's holds a rich hiking history. There must be good luck in there for me somehow.  Actually, I've been wanting to walk the whole AT in Georgia. Since I can't do the whole 79 miles in one day, I'll take it in chunks. This section is mile 30.7 to 37.1.  Hopefully the temperature won't be in that same range on the day of the hike. :-)

We will begin at the Byron Reece parking area and walk the .6 miles along the road to get to Neels Gap and the Walasi-Yi Center. Then back on the AT as we start off with the biggest climb of the day...up about 800' over 1.5 miles to Levelland Mtn. From there we descend to Swaim Gap and a number of smaller climbs and rolling terrain will eventually take us to Cowrock Mtn. We will take a short break here to enjoy the views before decending to Tesnatee Gap. Before proceeding to Hogpen Gap, we will take the Whitley Gap side trail to Wildcat Mtn and have lunch here while enjoying the views. Then we will proceed to Hogpen Gap and turn around and retrace our steps on the AT back to Neels Gap. For those interested, we can stop for dinner at Danny's (does this surprise anyone, really?).

Mileage breakdown:
- Parking to Neels Gap: .6 mi
- Neels Gap to Hogpen Gap: 6.4 mi
- Whitley Gap trail to Wildcat Mtn (r/t): 1.2 mi
- Hogpen Gap to Neels Gap: 6.4 mi
- Neels Gap to parking: .6 mi

Total distance: ~15.4 mi.
Total ascent: ~4400+ feet.

We will keep a fast pace, so if you have not completed a strenuous D5 or D6 recently, I will contact you to determine if this hike is right for you.

Also, please note that we will leave the carpool AT 7am.
