This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary.

Itinerary:

F.D. Roosevelt State Park, Georgia’s largest state park, is a hiker’s and backpacker’s haven located on Pine Mountain.  The long, narrow ridge, composed of quartzite rock formations, is the southernmost mountain in Georgia.

Over two days, we will backpack the entire 23-mile Pine Mountain Trail, which in winter offers clear crisp views of distant ridges with occasional snowfall.  Quiet woods, sparkling streams, misty waterfalls, rock outcroppings, varied forest, scenic overlooks, deer and turkey await our discovery.  Although we will not be assigned a specific campsite until we arrive, we will aim to setup camp about halfway through the trail.  On Sunday, the park is celebrating F.D.R's 131st birthday, so if we finish our hike before 4pm, we can stop by the visitor center for some free cake!

This backpacking trip is somewhere between a D4/D5 because although we will cover 23 miles over 2 days with packs, there will not be any steep, challenging climbs or difficult terrain.  We will also not be hiking at a fast or fitness hike pace.

Note: This event involves a car shuttle, so after picking up our permits at the visitor center on Saturday morning, we will leave half of the cars at the end of the trail and then drive everyone to the beginning of the trail to start the hike.
