#7 - Coosa Bald

Looking for a great workout?  Join me for the Georgia Triple Crown - Coosa/Slaughter/Blood!

We'll start at Vogel State Park, hiking along the Coosa Backcountry Loop. Along the way we'll summit Coosa Bald (4280') and then the seldom climbed Slaughter Mountain (4338'). Rather than returning to Vogel State Park, we will continue on to Blood Mountain (4458') were we should arrive in time to see a beautiful sunset (5:30 PM) and to howl at the rising full moon (4:41 PM). Depending on the weather conditions, we might even choose to hang out and enjoy the view from the top for an hour or so (bring a headlamp and some dinner "snack").

This is NOT a beginners hike so be sure you in good physical condition. If you haven't done a D5 hike before, this might not be for you. If at doubt, please sign up for one of the trip leader's weekly fitness hikes at Stone Mtn. As many of you know, the Coosa Backcountry Loop is an extremely strenuous trail. Please be sure you are up to a 16+ mile hike with some extended climbs! I plan to keep a solid pace and stop for a break every now and then.

Required Items to Bring:
  • WATER & GATORADE
  • sunblock & hat
  • bug spray
  • emergency rain gear (even if chance of rain is minimal)
  • enough food to keep your energy level up and a dinner "snack"
  • headlamp
  • hiking boots or trail shoes
Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.
  • trekking poles
  • camera

How to Get There:
Event Directions:

Take GA 400/US 19 north to Dahlonega.  We will make a pit stop in Dahlonega at the McDonald's there.  It will be on your left on US 19.  Then take US 19 north to where it joins US 129 at Turners Corner. Continue north on US 19/129 for 11 miles to Vogel State Park.

This is a shuttle hike: We are starting at Vogel State Park and finish at the parking lot of Bryon Reece & Freeman trail (near Neels Gap). We will leave one car there on the drive up, so the drivers of the other cars can catch a ride at the end to get their vehicles from Vogel State Park.
