This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary.

Itinerary:

Some argue that the Maddron Bald loop in the Cosby area of the Smokies may be one of the best backpacking trips in the park.  Along the route are waterfalls, cool, moss-lined streams, an old-growth forest, and the pinnacle, 5,200-foot Maddron Bald.

From the trailhead at Cosby campground, we will hike about 5 miles along the Snake Den Ridge Trail to the top of Maddron Bald and then continue about 1.5 miles down the Maddron Bald Trail to Otter Creek Campsite #29, where we will spend the night.

The next morning, we will continue following the Maddron Bald trail for about 4.5 miles to the junction with Gabes Mountain Trail, while taking a short detour on the Albright Grove Loop to admire the old-growth Carolina silverbells, hemlocks, beech and tulip trees.  Finally, we will take Gabes Mountain Trail for about 7 miles back to our cars, stopping along the way to see Hen Wallow Falls.

This is NOT a beginners backpacking trip, so please be sure you are in good physical condition.  However, we will not be hiking at a fast or fitness hike pace.
