Itinerary:

The North Georgia mountains may not be the Himalayas or the Rockies, but do offer many opportunties for challenging and exciting hikes to outstanding scenic views.  For this series, we are summiting the 20 highest peaks in Georgia.  (For more info on the criteria used, click here.)

#4 - Blood Mountain

At 4458' above sea level and with 1476' of clean prominence, Blood Mountain is perhaps the most famous peak in Georgia. Located on the border of Lumpkin County and Union County, Blood Mountain has the highest section of the Appalachian Trail in Georgia, and is the fourth tallest mountain in Georgia. The two-room stone shelter on top of Blood Mountain was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in 1934 and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Join me on one of my favorite North Georgia hikes. This will be a moderately paced hike that is 4.8 miles roundtrip and about 1500 feet elevation gain. We will begin at the Byron Reece Trailhead near Neel’s Gap. We will hike the Bryon Reece Trail up several switchbacks and meet up with the Appalachian Trail at .7 miles. We will then continue south on the AT for another 1.7 miles to the shelter on top of Blood Mountain. Here we will rest a while, enjoy the beautiful views and eat lunch before heading back to the car. If people would like, we can stop at the Walasi-Yi Store at Neel’s Gap before heading back to Atlanta.

Note: this will be a fun hike, but the exact date and exact route may change before we open registration.

Note: Parking at the Bryon Herbert Reece parking lot is limited to 24 cars. Please make every effort to carpool. If the parking lot is full, I will change the start location to lake Winfield Scott. This will add three miles to the hike. This route will be more of a gradual incline, whereas, leaving from Byron Reece Trailhead is fairly steep.
