This is Series #2 of "Wellness Hike" in support of the February's "2013 Go Red for Heart Women" and to get ready for March's - "2013 National Nutrition Month".
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the United States, killing 292,188 women in 2009—that’s 1 in every 4 female deaths. As a clinician and long time advocate for preventive health, I am inviting beginners to participate in my "Wellness Hike" events. Please wear something RED in support for this Cause. Suwanee Greenway Trail is another interesting and convenient hiking trail which can be accessed from the trailhead at either the Suwanee Creek Park or the George C. Pierce Park both located along Buford Highway near the City of Suwanee. The Suwanee Creek Park is an 85-acre passive recreation area serving the residents of Gwinnett County. It has two shelters, picnic areas, benches and meadows for play areas. The George C. Pierce Park is a 300-acre park with lots of amenities, including a multipurpose center. This park has several trails that loop through the area and intersect with each other which are suitable for any types of walking for exercise. Hiking through the Suwanee Greenway Trail gives you that amazing imagination of how the County has transformed a neglected dumping ground of hazardous chemicals into environmentally sound wetlands and parks. According to history, in less than 30 years, this transformed environment enticed herons, egrets, hawks and even waterfowl and raptors to inhabit this wetland. This is another success story of Gwinnett County's innovation to serve the public. What I like about this trail is that anyone can use this for biking, leisure walk, or power walk. The southern trailhead is at Suwanee Creek Park, 1170 Buford Highway. The northern trailhead is at George Pierce Park, just north of Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road on Buford Highway/Highway 23. We will start from the southern trailhead located at Suwanee Creek Park and will take our break once we arrive at the 2.5-mile marker bench and a short session on "Heart Disease Prevention & Nutrition ABC" will be given. We will then proceed to the northern trailhead located at the entrance of Georgia C. Pierce Park and turn around to return to our cars. | |||||||
