Itinerary:

Blood Mountain and Big Cedar Mountain via the Appalachian Trail.

Starting at Lake Winfield Scott, we'll take the Slaughter Gap Trail to where it intersects with the AT.  From there we'll go up the western side of Blood Mountain approximately 1400'.  After a break for snacks and taking in the view we'll descend the eastern slope to Flatrock Gap.  At Flatrock take the Freeman Trail around the mountain back to the AT.  We'll head south on the AT to Big Cedar Mountain (elevation 3721'), which has a very nice view of the surrounding area.  We'll end our trek at Woody Gap.

We will leave one vehicle at Woody Gap on the way up to help us make this more enjoyable and feasible in one day.  There will need to be a short (approx 7 miles) shuttle back to Lake Winfield Scott to get the vehicles not left at Woody Gap.

The trip should be approximately 14 miles with several nice climbs.  The views at Blood and Big Cedar are both spectacular at any time of year.

This will be a moderately paced hike with stops at each intersection.  There will need to be at least two vehicles for the shuttle from Woody Gap to Lake Winfeild Scott.

Since it is a long hike, I would encourage beginners might to contact me before signing up.  Hikers should be prepared for the weather and a long day of hiking!!!

Parking at Lake Winfield Scott is $3 a day unless you have the parks pass.
