This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary.

Itinerary:

Everyone loves Siler Bald! This time we'll be hiking an alternate route - from the Backcountry Information Center. Plus a bonus - We'll be taking a short side hike to see one of the largest Poplar trees in the south east - The Waslick Poplar. Although the tree is now dead and bug eaten, the venerable giant is impressive none the less.

From Rock Gap, we'll hike about 8 miles on the Appalachian Trail, past Winding Stair Gap, to the 5,216 foot summit of Siler Bald. We can take our time at the top to take in the 360 degree view and enjoy lunch. Then we'll hike the 8 miles back. Once back at the Rock Gap parking lot, we'll take a side trail down through an amazing hardwood forest to see the Waslick Poplar.

Total hiking distance - about 17 miles. Elevation gain - about 3000 feet.

This will be a long and somewhat strenuous hike.   We won’t be moving too fast but the days are short this time of year.  Please do not sign up for this trip unless you have an established record of D5 hikes with AOC. The trip leaders reserve the right to remove hikers from the sign-up list.
