Note: This is an "EXPLORATORY" trip. This means that there are parts of this trip, or perhaps the whole trip, that is new to your Trip Leader(s). However, they are confident that this will not be an issue.
This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary.

Itinerary:

We'll meet at the carpool at 9:00, and leave around 9:15. This will put us at the East Loop trail head 9:30-ish. We'll hike the short side of the East loop, cross the pass and hike around the West loop. We'll then cross back over the pass and hit the summit (probably around 11:30), where we'll eat our lunches and admire the view, which is quite lovely, save for the smoke stacks that spew out of the coal-fired power plant in the distance (just hold a finger over them as you gaze out). After lunch we'll walk the rest of the East loop back to the East Loop trail head.

NOTE THAT WE WILL MEET AT THE CARPOOL LOCATION (not the trail head) at 9 AM.

I'm going to limit us to 3 dogs. Please be sure your dog is well-behaved around strangers and other dogs, and of course bring a leash and poop bags.

Required Items to Bring:

Water, picnic lunch, layers you can take off and a waterproof windbreaker/shell in case it's windy or rainy, and decent shoes/boots for hiking. CASH FOR THE PARKING FEE, up to $5.00 per car (I'm thinking it's $3.00 but I haven't been there in a while). Also cash for gas if you intend to carpool and ride in someone else's car.

Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.

Trekking poles, sunglasses, sunscreen.

How to Get There:
Event Directions:

We will meet at the carpool location (see below) at 9 AM. If you want to meet at the trail head, please contact me, and use these directions: To the East Loop Trail head: Take I-75 north from Atlanta to exit 290 (Canton Highway). Turn right off the ramp. Take your first right (after maybe 500 feet) onto County Road 294N (heading mostly South)/Hwy 20 Spur. Follow 294N/GA-20 3.2 miles to the parking area on the RIGHT, (which is very close to Bartow Beach Rd SE, which you'll pass on the left just before the parking area).

Carpool to Event Distance (round trip):23Mile(s)
Carpool Departure Time: 9:15 am
Carpool Location:   Log in for location
Carpool Directions:   Log in for directions
Carpool Cost: Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $9.20 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile. The total amount should be divided by the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Notes:

If it's looking like definite and heavy rain we'll reschedule.
