This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary.

Itinerary:

The Cherokee Indian word Nantahalameans "land of the midday sun"—an appropriate name for a forest in which deep mountain gorges and valleys are illuminated only when the noon sun is directly overhead.  This Sunday we return to Rock Gap for another long and beautiful hike in the area.

We'll start our hike at Rock Gap in North Carolina's Nantahala Range of the Appalachian Mountains.  We'll hike along the AT in the opposite direction of our last hike to Siler Bald.  We'll hike about 6 miles to Albert Mountain and if it's not locked, we'll climb the fire tower at the 5250 foot summit for a great view in all directions.  From Albert Mountain, we’ll continue 1.6 miles along the AT, past Big Butt Mountain, to Mooney Gap and USFS Road 83.  Mooney Gap receives over 93 inches of precipitation every year, making it among the wettest places in the eastern United States, but we’re hoping for good weather on this hike.  We’ll continue along USFS Road 83 for a mile or so until we reach the Pickens Nose Trail.  We’ll hike along this trail for less than a mile to the summit.  At this point, we're very close to Georgia.  We hope to be here by 1 pm to enjoy the view and a late lunch.

After eating, we’ll head back the way we came, skipping the Mt. Albert summit, for a round trip of about 18 miles.

This will be a long and somewhat strenuous hike.   We won’t be moving too fast but the days are short this time of year.  Please do not sign up for this trip unless you have an established record of D5 hikes with AOC. The trip leaders reserve the right to remove hikers from the sign-up list.
