Itinerary:
Moderate to Strenuous 7 mile

For this hike we are going to approach Blood Mountain from the somewhat lesser used trials starting at Lake Winfield Scott. Total hiking distance will be about seven miles and the elevation gain will be pretty steady from the start until we reach the summit of Blood Mountain which is the highest point on the Georgia portion of the Appalachian Trial.

If it is a clear day we should have some great 360 degree views at our lunch spot on Blood Mountain. About half of this hike will be along the Appalachian Trail.

I generally aim to go at a moderately fast pace, stopping every 30 to 45 minutes to let the group gather up. You should be in fairly good shape to do this hike as the elevation gain is over 1000 ft. If you are new to hiking in the mountains you may want to e-mail (not call) the hike leader to make sure this is the right hike for you.

Depending on what the group wants to do, we may stop in Dahlonega on the way back to eat a late lunch.

Carpool Cost: Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $54.00 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile. The total amount should be divided by the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Notes:

Are Dogs Permitted? Yes, but only a limited number. They should be well behaved and be able to go 7 miles. Please e-mail the trip leader if you plan to bring your dog.

Will this event occur rain or shine? We will cancel the hike if it looks like there will be medium to heavy rains. I’ll e-mail everyone the day before the hike about the current status.
