Itinerary:
We are NOT going to Slickrock Wilderness this weekend. After calling the Ranger station today I have learned the area is currently on fire and rangers and fire teams are working to put out the fire. Yeah I know 2nd time this has happened to me this year. Don't ask me how I have no idea. Anyways I have another trip put together that should be just as much fun if not more than Slickrock, the catch is it's more difficult.

Slickrock was just an easy lets go check it out hike.

New Trip Rating D5

Our new destination is Shining Rock Wilderness and the Pisgah National Forest. Yes I have been there and so have some of you but NOT this way, at least I hope not.

Loop trail with a few options.

We will start and END at Big East Fork parking area just outside the Wilderness. We will then hike in about 4 miles along Old Butt Knob trail, Difficult rated, 2,600' elevation gain. On this trail we grab 2 peaks just under 6,000'. This brings us to Shining Rock and Shining Rock Gap. Here we can check out the views from the "Rock". Probably a lunch spot. Water source also here so you can travel light on water while doing the elevation gain.

After filing up we head south along the Art Loeb Trail (1.5 miles). Blueberries might still be here, they were out 2-3 weeks ago. We will take this to Ivestor Gap and then switch to an easy trail, Graveyard Ridge trail. We can take this south about 3.5 miles to the graveyard fields and camp near the second falls (water source) of the Yellowstone Prong. We will be very close to the Blue Ridge Pkwy but I don't think there will be a lot of traffic at night.

If for some reason we don't make good time there is a smaller loop that cuts off a mile. I doubt we will have to use that though, The roster on this trip is pretty stout. (No whimps) So that will give us about 9 miles day 1, a pretty good push but like I said should be fine for us.

Day 2 is cake compared to day 1. About 4.5 miles back to the car, all downhill it looks like. Camp is about 5,000', parking arteas is at 3,400'
We have a good group but think smart. Pack warm BUT pack light. 9 miles with a good elevation gain will wear on you with a full pack.

We will be outside the Wilderness with the longer loop where fires are allowed.

PACK COLD WEATHER GEAR. NO JOKE!

Temp in Brevard (Closest City @ 2,000' elevation) is suppose to be about 36 degrees. We are 3,000' higher and NOT in the city.

FOOD: Bring Lunch and Dinner for Saturday on the Trail and Breakfast for Sunday on the Trail.

I am bringing a small cooler for Lunch on Sunday when we get to the cars. You can do the same or grab something when we are headed south.

CARPOOL: Same time 7:30 AM at the Marriott on I-85 @ Pleasant Hill Rd.

Please email me or call me if you have any questions or problems with the trip. if you want to bail I understand.

I think this trip will actually be better than the Slickrock one though. there is a lot of cool stuff
