Itinerary:

Thanks to local boy Jimmy Carter, Atlantans have the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Areas nestled within the confines of home.  The Vickery Creek unit has become fashionable within the club for, among other things, both the Meet the Officers Newcomer Hikes and for Danny's not-Kennesaw Trail Runs.  Full of undulating terrain, this unit provides a great opportunity for budding trail runners to build up their stamina while still presenting the experienced runner with the chance to improve their cardio.

This event will cover ~5.6 at a moderate pace, but it will be a running pace.  At times the regular group has stayed together, but that is not always the case.  Newer runners are most definitely welcome (it's where I cut my running teeth), but should to be comfortable with the possibility of running solo from time to time.  Don't worry, if you're new to the unit we'll cover the route (for the veterans, we'll be making three lefts at the first intersection) which is also included on the map below and I won't leave until everyone is back.

Please be on time as we will start promptly at 5:00pm, even earlier if everyone is ready.  As with Danny's versions of this event, we will meet at the trail head parking area off of Dobbs Drive which is off of Oxbo Road.  Turn onto Dobbs Drive off of Oxbo, then go up the hill.  Soon you will come to a parking area on the right that has a few spaces for day users of the trail.  See the red circle (well it's kind of a circle anyway.  Looks more like a house) in the map shown. Look for the brown signs that says "Bridge and Trail Parking".

Required Items to Bring:
  • Running shoes (must be in good condition);
  • Water or sports drink (for mid-run or post-run hydration); and,
  • Yourself (kinda hard to be there without being there).
Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.
  • Rain gear (if you're prone to melting);
  • Snack (for after the run);
  • A copy of the map (for those not-so-directionally inclined);
  • A sense of adventure (taking three lefts can be confusing); and,
  • Injury Avoidance Skills (no one's allowed to get hurt).

How to Get There:
Event Directions:

We well meet at the trail head parking area off of Dobbs Drive which is off of Oxbo Road. Turn onto Dobbs Drive off of Oxbo, then go up the hill. Soon you will come to a parking area on the right that has a few spaces for day users of the trail.  Don't go all the way to the fields.  The parking spaces are beside a building. There is a sign at the turn that reads "Bridge and Trail Parking".  In the parking lot there are 5 spaces with a sign saying "Reserved for Trail and Bridge Use".

From GA 400: Get off at Holcomb Bridge Road GA 140 and head west towards Roswell.  Take a left at the first redlight which is Dogwood Road (there is a Krystal there).  Take a right at the first redlight which is Grimes Bridge Road.  After crossing the bridge over Big Creek (aka Vickery Creek here) take a left at the redlight which is Oxbo Road.  Take a right onto Dobbs Drive, head up the hill and look for the Pedestrian Bridge Parking sign on the right near the top of the hill.  Turn right and park there. There is a sign at the turn that reads "Bridge and Trail Parking".  In the parking lot there are 5 spaces with a sign saying "Reserved for Trail and Bridge Use".

From GA 9: Heading north in GA 9 (aka South Atlanta Street), pass GA 120 (aka Marietta Highway) then watch for Oxbo Road on the right at a Chevron station.  Take a left onto Dobbs Drive, head up the hill and look for the Pedestrian Bridge Parking sign on the right near the top of the hill.  Turn right and park there. There is a sign at the turn that reads "Bridge and Trail Parking".  In the parking lot there are 5 spaces with a sign saying "Reserved for Trail and Bridge Use".
