Itinerary:

Conasauga RiverThe Conasauga River is in the scenic Cohutta Wilderness near Cisco, Georgia. This section of the trail is an easy in & out (~5 mi. total) with 6 river crossings each way - nothing wild, but sometimes waist deep and usually slippery. A sturdy hiking stick for the crossings is recommended (I don't recommend two poles - better to have one hand free for grabbing rocks).

We have an unmarked lunch spot that we use every year, atop some large, flat rocks in the middle of the river. After lunch we leave our gear and river-walk/rock-hop up this peaceful portion of the river, enjoying the small waterfalls, butt-slides, and swimming holes. Or if you like, just lie on the rocks and read a book. We'll hang out here for 2 full hours before heading back. Like most river hikes, it's uphill on the way out once we leave the river, but not very steep.

A favorite part of this hike is dinner at Little Rome in Chatsworth. Good, home-made Italian food; large portions and very low prices. If the weather cooperates, we sit outside.

Pace: We like a leisurely pace for this event and regroup after each river crossing.

Equipment: You must be prepared to do the in & out part without stopping at river crossings to change shoes or attire. Costume changes at the lunch spot are fine. Quick-dry clothing or a bathing suit works well for the hike. River shoes or an old pair of sneakers will suffice if you don't care to wear boots. No flip-flops though.
