Itinerary:
This hike will be a challenging 18.5 mile round trip day hike on the northern-most section of the Appalatian Trail in GA. We will begin the hike at Dick Creek's Gap, where the AT crosses Hwy 76 west of Clayton. The hike leader will travel at a steady 2.5-3 mph average pace for 9 miles to Bly Gap, the GA / NC border x-ing. A distinguished old oak tree in the center of the trail with low crooked branches for sitting marks the state line. Here we will take a 30-45 minute break for lunch, before heading back south to the starting point. The vistas from the ridgeline and at Bly Gap should be nice since the trees will be shedding their leaves by then. This is a strenuous hike which takes 6.5 to 8.5 hours of steady brisk walking to complete the full distance. Please sign up only if you are in very good physical condition, and have experienced at least one strenuous 10-12 mile day-hike. This is an out-and-back trip with no other trail options to get lost on. You may travel at your own pace ahead or behind the trip leader, but requested to turn around towards the start no later than 1pm, or 4 hours after we begin. This is for consideration of your carpool companions, the trip leader, and to keep it from becoming a nighthike return!
