Itinerary:
Come challenge yourself and explore the beautiful Shining Rock Wilderness area. Located just south of Asheville by the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Shining Rock area has some of the most beautiful scenery in the entire Southeast. We will be hiking fast through alpine like summits and evergreen forests more akin to Canada than the Southeast. The hikes will feature extensive views from several high altitude balds. This is a STRENUOUS hiking adventure. We will set high goals for mileage on Saturday and be hiking from before sunrise to after sunset. YOU MUST BE IN EXCELLENT PHYSICAL CONDITION. You should be able to maintain a minimum of 2 miles per hour over rough and steep terrain for an ENTIRE DAY. If you're not sure you can do this then you're not ready. Friday - we will leave after work and drive up to Asheville where we will stay (in hotel) for the night. Get to sleep early and sleep well. You will need it! Saturday - Our goal for today will be 20 - 25 miles. We will rise very early and make the drive south on the Blue Ridge Parkway to our trailhead. We will be staging a shuttle at a secondary trailhead in case of time running short on us or emergency. We should hit the trail no later than 4:30am. The planned circuit will be as follows: 4.3mi via Old Butt Knob over Old Butt Knob and Dog Loser Knob to Shining Rock Gap 4.7mi via Art Loeb Trail over Stairs Mountain 1.5mi from Deep Gap to Cold Mountain 1.5mi back to Deep Gap 4.7mi back to Shining Rock Gap 1.8mi via Art Loeb Trail over Flower Knob to Ivestor Gap .7mi up to Tennent Mountain .7mi back to Ivestor Gap 1.8mi via Ivestor Gap Trail to Shining Rock Gap 4.1mi via Shining Creek Trail to trailhead We will have escape routes from Cold Mountain and Ivestor Gap for emergency use. If we manage to complete the entire circuit we will have completed 25.8 miles. Note we WILL be hiking in darkness both before sunrise and after sunset. The trails are well worn and easy to sight even in the dark. Sunday - we will sleep in for recovery. I'm planning on everyone meeting for a nice lunch in Asheville. We can either explore Asheville or find a short hike in the area.
