Itinerary:
In the past I’ve lead trips to the Gauley and Cheoha Rivers and for 2008 we’ll venture to the Nolichucky. Unlike past trips where we were in a raft with 5-8 people, we’ll have the option of rafting OR be in funyaks (aka duckys).

SATURDAY we hit the river Funyaks are inflated, rubber looking canoes that put you at the center of the action. Don’t be fooled, you will paddle (and float) nearly ten miles of class III to IV free flowing river, accompanied by a guide. For those of you choosing the raft option, you sit on the edge with a foot snug inside the raft and you lean over the side and paddle when told to do so by the guide.

Funyaks are a lot of fun but not always for everybody. You sit in the boat and some water accumulates because they're self bailing and that can be uncomfortable in early spring. Wet suits are included in the AOC rate.

The outfitter can't allow funyaks on the river if the water is too high to run. Instead, they will put us in a raft for safety and insurance purposes. We’ll run the river no matter what the conditions but funyaks are not guaranteed! Due to the option of a funyak or raft, and based upon number of participants, if you choose a raft you may be in a boat that has a few NON AOC members.

LODGING: You may bring a tent and camp on-site, however we’ll be sleeping in a bunkhouse. The bunkhouses have: · Primitive camping with a roof! · wood siding ¾ up with the top ¼ screened in · Provide excellent scenery and soothing breeze · Bunk beds and mattresses You will have to bring sheets, pillows, sleeping bags, blankets, etc. April in the mountains can be cold – be prepared!

Bunkhouses are essentially camping with a roof and a bed. There is a bathhouse at the main building with hot running water and showers but it's a good way from the campground.

MEALS: The outfitter has a wonderful menu! Your AOC payment covers breakfast on Saturday and Sunday. They have a good selection, considering we’ll be far away from anything serving food! How does breakfast burrito, cereal, muffin, bread, and juice sound? And best of all, it is all you can eat! We get lunch on the river and upon our return to camp you have a choice of spaghetti, BBQ pork/beef, or Turkey (plus sides) for dinner Saturday. Beverages are included with the meal.

OTHER: Also included on this trip - a Saturday night hayride and bonfire.

What you don’t get: Dinner Friday – on your own Lunch Sunday – on your own Snacks and drinks – bring your own Tip – please pay raft guide directly

Carpool and directions determined by number of participants.

DISCLAIMER I’ve listed this as an intermediate trip. Prior experience is not required but HIGHLY suggested. Unless a significant downpour occurs a few days beforehand, we’ll likely be in funyaks. You should be in decent shape and have NO FEAR OF THE WATER.

SUNDAY – after breakfast – no plan yet Options – immediately return to Atlanta, raft the river AGAIN, or hike/mtn bike nearby. We’ll discuss options in the AOC FORUM in a few weeks.

Please email me your raft/funyak preference, skill level and driving plans.
