Itinerary:

Are you are up for a challenging day hike?

Come join us for a very unique trail in the beautiful South Cumberland Recreation Area near Tracy City, TN. For the most part this is a loop trail with a total of about 10 1/2 miles roundtrip hiking.

We'll be hiking part of the Fiery Gizzard Trail and starting at the northern trailhead of Grundy Forest State Natural Area. The trail features many waterfalls, cascading streams, gentle slopes, lush woodlands, spectacular rock formations, extremely rocky gorges and even a very small cave. We'll have an arduous climb before reaching a natural sandstone bridge and a short hike to Raven Point. Raven point is where we will stop for lunch and hopefully have some beautiful fall foliage and views.

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING BEFORE SIGNING UP FOR THIS HIKE!
  • This is considered a difficult hike due to terrain and mileage.
  • Please make sure you are in good physical condition and have hiked an 8 to 10 mile moderately difficult hike recently.
  • If you have bad knees or issues hiking downhill or stepping down on rocks for long periods of time, then this is not the hike for you. I can't stress this enough because the extremely rocky gorge goes for about 2 miles of the first part of the hike. The rocks can be slippery, wet and unstable and need to be hiked with caution.
  • If you have vertigo, then this is also not the hike for you. There are many ridges and narrow spots especially the climb toward Raven point.

  • Required Items to Bring:
  • 2 liters of water ( I'll have my filter too)
  • Trail snacks
  • Lunch
  • Good hiking boots/shoes (No Tennis Shoes or Sneakers allowed on this hike!)
  • Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.
  • Hiking Poles/Stick would be very helpful
  • Rain jacket (just in case, but weather is looking good for Sunday)
  • Jacket / light sweater for cooler weather

  • How to Get There:
    Event Directions:
We'll give out directions at carpool location.

Carpool to Event Distance (round trip):300Mile(s)
    Carpool Departure Time: 7:30 am

Carpool Cost: Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $120.00 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile. The total amount should be divided by the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances.

    Notes:

Are Dogs Permitted? No. There are too many rocky sections of this hike.

Will this event occur rain or shine? No, not in severe weather
