Itinerary:

We will meet at the Thornton Road park and ride lot, close to the park to minimize the 3 dollar per car fee; plus save parking spots for others; as this is a very popular state park with limited parking.

Once at the park, we will hike the yellow trail, which begins in fairly level terrain for the first mile, including crossing Sweetwater Creek on a stout metal bridge (purchased from the military)Once this easy trail meanders across the bridge, it gets to a fork where we bear left and uphill in a fairly moderate, but steady, not too steep a grade; we'll take at slow enough pace to not break up the group. This is the least populated trail in the park, and on the way down the back side; we'll take a little used side path on the left to a nice rock overlook across the creek from the mill ruins; and stop there for lounging, talking and lunch.

From there, we'll walk back across the bridge and take a short cut trail to the red 'historical trail' to the mill ruins closeby and linger there to read the history for anyone interested, hopefully see nice fall colors moving into the nice scenery on all trails. After the mill ruins the blue trail is a different loop back that passes the nice new visitor center with great local animal display-birds and mammals and a nice history display of the mill and gift shop and civilized restrooms to use before heading to our cars and home early to enjoy the rest of the day and evening at whatever activities you might have planned around town.

Required Items to Bring:
  • at least 1 liter of water and/or gatorade
  • trail snacks and/or lunch
  • clothes appropriate for cooler temps
  • supportive shoes for rockier terrain in some places-tennis shoes just might do for these mostly dirt trails; as long as they provide some support.
  • Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.
  • camera for nice fall colors and scenery in general.
  • raingear if necessary

  • How to Get There:
Event Directions:From the Thornton Road park and ride lot, we travel back down to Thornton Road, turn left and across the I-20 bridge, and shortly turn right on Blairs Bridge Road between two huge car dealerships and follow this road until it comes to and intersections after a couple of miles, where a sign directs us to turn left to Sweetwater Creek State Park and follow this road until it crosses whats left of the lake, over a bridge; and shortly after look for our left turn to pavilions and trails. If attendent is on duty, we'll have to stop at the little park attendant's shack and pay 3 bucks per car to enter the park. In a short distance, staying straight we'll shortly arrive at the trails parking area which is front of all trails starting points.
Carpool to Event Distance (round trip):8Mile(s)
    Carpool Departure Time: 9:15 am

Carpool Cost: Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $3.20 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile. The total amount should be divided by the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances.

    Notes:
Come join us for this nice walk with nice fall colors in the wide variety of trees that populate this hilly park. Being close to town we will all be back to whatever activities you desire in the late afternoon and evening.
    * We encourage all members to follow our Etiquette Guidelines while participating in AOC events.

Cost Includes:assuming full cars, everyone should throw one dollar to driver for his time and use of vehicle and parking fee (3 per car)-driver shouldnt bear any expense for driving-short a distance as it is. This is to conserve limited parking spaces in this very popular State park. People walk their dogs here, and dogs are fine on the trip; IF well behaved and leashed as all others I've seen on these trails.

Cancellation/Partial Attendance:   Please review the AOC cancellation policy.
*Note: As always, if some reason comes up, as many do in real life; drop off as soon as you know; so someone else can go on the trip in your place.
