Itinerary:

You may have seen disclaimers on other AOC paddling events listing the need to self rescue. It probably read something like this: "Please be comfortable enough around water to take care of yourself and possibly swim. If you fall out of your boat you need to be able to take care of yourself while waiting on assistance from someone else to retrieve your boat and/or paddle and/or help you back in your kayak."

I'm willing to share what I know but first we'll paddle around the lake at Sweetwater Creek SP.  The water is plenty warm so dress appropriately.  This is a very calm lake with little to no current. After a while of paddling we can cool off by practicing solo re-entry and assisted entry.  Your TL will demonstrate the two methods he learned to re-enter the boat.

The park rents boats but not after 4PM and they must be returned by 5pm.  For this event you need your own boat or if you wish, you may hike one of the trails and meet later for the self rescue demonstration.  Plan to get wet if you participate as spectator only is not an option.

If you can't make the 6pm start go ahead and arrive at your convenience.  This is not a big lake and you'll see the group.  I have a 12' light blue kayak and have a dark blue vest.  I'll carry my cell phone with me too.

Technically, boating should not be allowed at Sweetwater Creek SP.  The lake is the backup drinking water for East Point.  No swimming is allowed but boating is permissible.  We moved this event to the 'Hooch.

Do not rely on GPS units for directions to this park. Take I-20 west from Atlanta, exit #44 at Thornton Road, turn left (south) and go 1/4 mile. Turn right on Blairs Bridge Road by the car delaership. After 2 miles, turn left on Mount Vernon Road and proceed to the park.

When you drive down Mt Vernon the boat launch area is on the left before the entrance to the area where the hiking trails are located.  You'll see the lake first and then the boat launch area.
