Itinerary:
7.0 mile hike

For our next Appalachian Trail Hike, we are going south to pick up a section starting at Woody Gap.

This hike starts at Woody Gap near Suches. We will hike approximately 3.5 miles to Gooch Gap with some real nice views of the valley. Although the relief map looks pretty level, the trail is very rocky and is usually muddy in some sections. After a short lunch, we will hike back to Woody Gap.

For those that have not hiked the Georgia AT or similar mountain trails, it is not like hiking on the trails within one hour of Atlanta. It’s rocky, it’s muddy, you go up and you go down, with 500 to 1000 foot elevation changes not uncommon.

This hike is pretty good one for those just starting out hiking in the mountains. With the dry weather we have been having, you should be able to get by without hiking boots, although you do need shoes with good grips (such as running shoes). It is a little easier than some of the AT hikes we have done but you still need to be in good shape to attempt it. If you are unsure you are up for this hike, please e-mail the trip leader.

If you haven't noticed the weather is getting cooler. And it will be much cooler and windier at the 3000 ft plus elevation we will be hiking at. This transaltes into shorter breaks and a little faster pace. Be sure and bring your cap and gloves.
