This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary.

Itinerary:

Wintertime in the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee; gone are the streams of tourists as side roads are closed --- and time for us to take on the State Highpoint of Tennessee: Clingmans Dome!

Starting on Saturday morning, we will be departing from Newfound Gap parking lot and follow the AT southwards for about 8 miles to the visitor platform on top of Clingmans Dome. After the mandetory summit pictures and Andy's famous victory dance, we will continue to our overnight shelter (either at Double Spring Gap or Mount Collins), bringing the day's total hiking distance to 10 or 11 miles. Please remember that it might not sound like a lot but the seasonal conditions can be quite harsh up there in December, so be prepared!

After a restful night in winter wonderland, we will be returning to our cars on Sunday morning (5 to 10 miles depending on the location of the shelter where we can get reservations).

Required Items to Bring:

The usual for a winter backpacking trip -- if I have to tell you what to bring, please do not be signing up. We will be staying at one of the shelters. These are open wooden structures but offer little extra comfort.

I will bring a white-gas stove (please be aware that regular gas stoves will likely fail in cold weather conditions), so we can all boil water for dinner, hot drinks, etc.)

Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.
