***ITINERARY CHANGE***

Permit # 63676 (Porch of Cosby Campground)
I just learned there are 2 more peaks I was unaware of in the Smokys. Yeah you know it, now were gonna hit 9. Yeah Baby.

Please read the hiking schedule below

Friday Night we will leave Atlanta and head towards the Smokies.

We will drop the first set of cars off at Newfound Gap before heading to our trailhead East of Gatlinburg.

We will hike approx 5.5 miles to the Campsite #36 where we will spend Friday Night. (this is 2 more night hiking miles then we originally had. We will be hiking at NIGHT with full gear so please be prepared.

Saturday we will continue South along Gunter Fork Trail to hit the 2 Peaks we almost missed! After 5 miles we will leave the trail and bushwack to Big Cataloochee Mtn (6,155') After hitting this peak we will return to the trail and turn back north. We will follow the Balsam Mtn Trail and then bushwack maybe .25 miles to Luftee Knob (6,234') After Luftee Knob we will return to the Balsam Mtn Trail where the trail turns west. About 1 mile before hitting the Tricorner Shelter we will hit Mt. Yonaguska (6,120') and then another bushwack to Marks Knob" (6,169'). this bushwack is approx 1 mile each way. After these 2 we have 1 last mile to camp at Tricorner Shelter. Total Mileage for Saturday is 15-16 miles.

Sunday Morning We can either day hike the first part of the day leaving our packs in the shelter or carry them if you prefer. We will turn North-East along the AT to grab 2 peaks, "Old Black" (6,370')&"Mt. Guyot" (6,621') after these 2 we turn around and head back towards Tricorner Shelter. Roundtrip to the shelter is about 5 miles. After passing tri-corner we continue South-West along the AT crossing 2 more Peaks, "Mt Champan" (6,417') and "Mt. Sequoyah" (6,003'). We end Sunday at Pecks Corner Shelter. Approx distance 10.5 miles

Monday we start out continueing South-West along the AT toward our last peak "Mt. Kephart" (6,217') 7.7 miles. After hitting Kephart we have 2.7 miles to NewFound Gap and our cars. Total mileage is 10.4

Monday is going to be a LONG DAY with that kind of mileage and the drive. We will break camp VERY EARLY. Pretend you are in the Marines. Bring enough batteries to make sure your headlamp works so you can pack your stuff in the dark. We will probably leave camp by 8am putting us at the cars by 1pm. We will leave lunch in the cars at Newfound Gap in a cooler.

We will then pick up our other vehicles and then head home to Atlanta. Drive time from once we leave Newfound Gap is estimated at 5.5 hrs including picking up the other vehicles.

This trip covers NINE (9) of the Beyond 6000 Mt Peaks.

You MUST have attended at least 2 backpacking trips with myself or someone else who can attest to your skill level. There are NO outs once on this trail. We will be traversing the middle of the Smokey Mtns.
