Itinerary:

Kennesaw Mountain is one of the many great things about living in Atlanta.  It affords you the opportunity to get a longer weekend workout without having to drive all over creation (unless you live on the east side of town!).

In preparing for two upcoming backpacking trips, I have been logging as many miles on the trails as possible, but the time has come to stay close to home for a day.   So come join me on my next Training Hike.  We will meet at the Visitor's Center, follow the traditional route over Big Kennesaw, Little Kennesaw, and Pigeon Hill, and continue on to the Illinois Monument.  After a short break there, we will return on a slightly different route that will include the three "peaks".

This is intended to be a faster paced event than most so you will be expected to keep up with me.  I anticipate taking less than an hour to hike from the Visitor's Center to Burnt Hickory Road.  If you are not sure that you will be able to complete the entire route at that pace, please consider signing up for a different event at Kennesaw.  You will be contacted if you do not have an established reputation as a strong D4/D5 hiker to determine if this is the right event for you.

The event will begin at 8:00am so please plan to arrive a few minutes early, including allowing 5 to 10 minutes to walk from the overflow lot, additional time for traffic, and time to use the facilities should you need so to do.

Dogs are permitted, but must be leashed per park policy and must be able to maintain the pace.

Required Items to Bring:
  • Sufficient water or gatorade (it's cooler now, but you still need it);
  • Hiking boots or trail running shoes (must be in good condition); and,
  • Yourself (hard to do the event if you aren't there).
Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.
  • Rain gear (if you're prone to melting);
  • Trail Snacks (for the stop at the Monument, afterward, or on the go munching);
  • A sense of adventure (even if you know the route); and,
  • Injury Avoidance Skills (no one's allowed to get hurt).

How to Get There:
Event Directions:

1) I-75 North to exit 267B Hwy 5 Canton Road Connector

2) If you are not heading west after getting off of the Interstate you are going the wrong way.  You should be heading towards US 41 and downtown Marietta after getting off of I-75 onto the Canton Road Connector and see Kennesaw Mountain on your right.

3) You will be tempted to take the first exit off of the Canton Road Connector which is US 41, but do not take it.  Proceed over US 41 on a bridge staying on the Canton Road Connector.

4) After crossing US 41 take a right at the first redlight which is Church Street Extension.

5) You should cross railroad tracks soon.

6) Take a left onto Old 41 at the second redlight.  If you get to US 41 again, you have missed the turn onto Old 41 so turn around.

7) Stay on Old US 41 until you pass in front of the mountain then turn left at the redlight and park in the main visitor center lot if you can.  If full head back out to Old 41, take a left and park in the new parking lot farther down the road on the left.

Meet prior to 8:00 AM at the cannon outside the main entrance of the visitor's center.

Notes:

Thanks go out to Danny for hashing through the directions over the years and also to Paula Schubert for the snowy benchmark picture.
