Itinerary:
Moderate Hike: 6 miles with a couple challenging hills.

Come join us as we begin 2008 with a moderate hike that finishes in the Bavarian tourist town of Helen, GA. This hike is aimed at new AOC members that want to get out and start hiking more, challenge themselves, and get familiar with the club, but aren’t quite ready for a 10-15 mile hike in the mountains. We’ll hike at a moderate pace and you can expect the hike to take around 1.5 hours in both directions (3 hours total). This is a well maintained trail, and there are plenty of signs and colored blazes to help guide you through the woods.

We’ll start off at the Unicoi Hill parking lot right up the road from the main square of Helen and hike the 3 mile trail up to the Unicoi Lodge. There will be restrooms available at the lodge, after the break we’ll then hike the 3 miles back down. When we return to the cars there is an option to explore the town, have lunch at one of the local restaurants, poke around in the tourist shops, or if you choose have a picnic lunch in the park.

When we arrange ride-alongs at the Mansell Park & Ride, we will try to pair up with a driver based on your desires to stay and explore Helen or if you’d like to get back to Atlanta.

Required Items to Bring:
Plenty of water, lunch or money to eat in town. 		Recommended Items to Bring:

- If you have hiking boots/shoes

- Trekking poles are good if you have them because the ground may be slippery.

- Please watch the weather and prepare accordingly for possible cold weather or rain.

Carpool Cost: Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $52.00 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile.
