This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary.

Itinerary:

This is an exploratory event neither of the trip leaders have been to these hikes. We will be exploring the Apalachicola Bluffs and Ravines Preserve in Bristol Florida.

Friday night will be arrival day and setting up camp.

The following Saturday morning we will awake early and begin the Torreya Hiking Trail(One of the most rugged hikes in Florida) treaking through landscape of bluffs and ravines, rising to 300 feet above the Apalachicola River at Logan’s Bluff. We will see some of the rarest species in the state in the ravines. You’ll climb through hardwood hammocks, pine flatwoods, and down into floodplain forests. We will pause at the Red Rock scenic area to enjoy the cliffs and take photos. This trail consists of two loops totalling 14 miles. We may not cover the full 14 but be prepared for a strenuos hike. After the hike we will head to camp for dinner and rest.

Bright and early Sunday morning we will pack up camp and head up to the Garden of Eden Nature Preservetrailhead located south of Torreya State Park. There are no bathrooms facilitys in the perserve. This trail is about a 3 hour trek covering 3.5 miles round trip.  The Garden of Eden Trail takes you through an enchanting area that local legend claims is the original Garden of Eden. You’ll hike in longleaf pine/ wiregrass uplands, skirt tops of dramatic steepheads, descend to cross their streams, ascend through sandhills, and eventually reach a spectacular view at Alum Bluff, 135 feet above the Apalachicola River. Because we drop into several steep ravines this is considered the second most difficult hike in Florida. Our plan is to be done by 1ish and at that point have lunch and head back to Atlanta arriving there around 6ish.

Camping Fee: $16.00 per night, plus tax.
