Itinerary:
This is a six-mile medium difficulty hike.

This hike features Keown Falls, and two different observation decks, with different views.

We will start at the gate near Pocket Road at 980 feet and hike along the gravel road .6 miles to the trail itself. From there we will ascend to Keown Falls and the first observation deck at 1420 feet, which will give us views to the east. Here we will have lunch. Then it’s on up the Johns Mountain Trail to the second observation deck of the day, at 1883 feet, with views to the west of a scenic farm valley and Taylor Ridge and other ridges. We will complete the loop along the ridge top and come back around to the first observation deck again, from which we will descend a different way from the way we came up, going under Keown Falls and by another lesser falls in the process. We will have completed a figure eight loop and will have had nearly 1000 feet of elevation gain for the day. We now return down the gravel road back to our cars.

Please be aware that it is entirely possible that Keown Falls, being an intermittent falls, will not be ‘running’ when we get there. If so, we will see where Keown Falls would have been if it had water in it.

In any case, I can think of no better way to celebrate Dr. King’s legacy of non-violence than to spend his day hiking peacefully in the woods. If you are not working that day, perhaps you can join us.
