Itinerary:
Ok gang, it's time for some backpacking South of Atlanta!! Pine Mountain is in F.D.Roosevelt State Park and is located in the west central part of the state, about 25 miles North of Columbus. Pine Mountain is a long narrow ridge made up of quartzite rock formations that is the southernmost mountain in Georgia. The forest is composed of shortleaf pine, hickory, blackjack oak, chestnut oak and black oak on the ridgetop. The views seem to be much more panoramic because everything that surrounds Pine Mountain is flat. The highest point we will pass which is Dowdell Knob at about 1,420. It's not huge in elevation change, but we will be keeping a 2 1/2 to 3 mph pace so you must be able to keep up. In addition, there are at least 9 water crossings and steep ridge drops. We will begin at the WJSP Tower Parking Lot and start our trip on the Wolfden Loop, a 6.7 mile stretch of trail. We will pass Slippery Rock Falls and Cascade Falls and pass Sassafras Hill Campsite and Sparks Creek Campsite on our way to our camp which will be at Brown Dog Bluff Campsite. The hike in is about 7.1 miles which should take approximately 4 hours and we'll pitch our tents for the evening.

PLEASE NOTE: FDR IS NOT ALLOWING CAMPFIRES!!There are several water sources during the hike in, and only 1 for the hike out.

The hike out will keep moving forward on the Pine Mountain trail and will continue on the Dowdell Knob and onto Boottop trail, then onto the Mountain Creek trail and finally through Beaver Ponds and back to the car. The hike out is approximately 8 miles and we'll plan to keep the same pace as day one.

Come join us for some cold weather backpacking!! Whoohoo!
