Itinerary:

While the weather is dreary today it is supposed to be spectacular tomorrow with cool temperatures and lots of sun.  The leaves should be starting to turn so we should have some spectacular views to go along with our spectacular weather.  If you got rained out today this hike is your chance to get out this weekend.

This hike will start at the trailhead at the end of Tallulah road. We will start by taking the Beech Creek trail to Case Knife Gap and then take a side trip to a couple of nice overlooks near the top of Big Scaly.  After returning to Case Knife Gap we will follow the usual AOC route to Standing Indian by taking the steep, primitive trail to the AT. We will then take the AT to the top of Standing Indian where we will have lunch and go down the AT west to Deep Gap. From there we will take the Deep Branch Gap trail back to the trailhead.

This hike will be 11 miles long and have about 3000 feet of elevation gain.

Faster hikers can go ahead if they have done this hike before and are familiar with the area but we will stop at all the major trail intersections to regroup. There are a couple of turns people sometimes miss so anyone that is not sure where the turns are will need to stay with the group.

This hike will probably take about 6.5 hours but could take as long as 8 depending on the group. The drive is about 2.25 hours each way not counting stops along the way.

NOTE:

Because this a D5 event, if you have not recently completed some tough AOC hikes, I will be contacting you to determine your level of fitness and experience to make sure this is the right hike for you. The first few miles of this hike are a steady uphill climb and the short section from Case Knife Gap to the AT is quite steep so you need to be in good shape.

This hike will be cancelled if the chance of thunderstorms is 50% or greater or a steady all day rain is forecast.  The forecast for Sunday is actually great, this is just my standard weather disclaimer.

Carpool Cost: Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $76.00 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile. The total amount should be divided by the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Notes:

Because this a D5 event, if you have not recently completed some tough AOC hikes, I will be contacting you to determine your level of fitness and experience to make sure this is the right hike for you. The first sevaral miles of this hike are unrelentingly uphill and steep in sections so you need to be in pretty good shape.

This hike will be cancelled if the chance of thunderstorms is 50% or greater or a steady all day rain is forecast.  The forecast for Sunday is actually great, this is just my standard weather disclaimer.
