Itinerary:

Come celebrate the shortest day of the year in a pub in Dahlonega. This year (and perhaps every year) it clocks in for Atlanta folks at 9 hrs 55 minutes, with sunrise at 7:38 and sunset at 17:33. Before the celebrations we’ll go on a brisk hike on the AT. We start at Woody Gap, on Hwy 60, 15 miles north of Dahlonega. We’ll warm up quickly with a 550+ foot-climb to the top of Big Cedar Mountain and stop for a moment to look at the view towards the south. We then descend to Miller Gap, then ascend Baker Mountain, and descend again to Jarrard Gap. Here we will turn around and have lunch somewhere out of the wind. On the way back we’ll take a short side trail to Preaching Rock for a second but wider view to the south. Total elevation gain is about 2000 ft.

All this assumes a cold winter day (see photo for blue sky). Should it be a dreary, rainy day, we'll skip Preaching Rock.

Required Items to Bring:

warm and rainproof clothes; lunch and 2 bottles water;
dry, clean shirt for wearing in the pub; shoes for wearing in the pub and maybe contredansing in the square, if we are lucky (and plastic bag in which to put your dirty boots, especially if you are driving in someone else's car)

Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.

How to Get There:
Event Directions:

North on GA 400 from the park and ride. When GA 400 ends at the Chevron station make a left onto US-19/GA60 until you reach Dahlonega. From Dahlonega, take GA 60 north for 15 miles until you reach the parking lot on the top of the mountain at Woody Gap.

Carpool to Event Distance (round trip):120Mile(s)

Carpool Cost: Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $48.00 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile. The total amount should be divided by the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Notes:

I will be contacting anyone who has not recently done a D4 hike with the AOC to see whether this is an appropriate hike for you.
