Itinerary:

Ok gang, Denise and I loved last weekend so much we've decided to do the entire Pine Mountain Trail, in 3 trips...so this will be trip 2!!

Pine Mountain is in F.D.Roosevelt State Park and is located in the west central part of the state, about 25 miles North of Columbus. Pine Mountain is a long narrow ridge made up of quartzite rock formations that is the southernmost mountain in Georgia. The forest is composed of shortleaf pine, hickory, blackjack oak, chestnut oak and black oak on the ridgetop. The views seem to be much more panoramic because everything that surrounds Pine Mountain is flat.

This time we will begin at Dowdell Knob Trailhead, pass Bethel Creek & Whiskey Still campsites and Mollyhugger Hill. We'll turn onto Sawtooth Trail and pass Grindstone Gap campsite, LilButt Knob and Fox Den Cove and on up to Big Knot Campsite where we will pitch our tents and stay for the night. In the morning we will continue past the Beech Bottom campsite and back past Mollyhugger Hill, Whiskey Still & Bethel Creek campsites and complete the loop at Dowdell Knob.

The hike in is about 8.2 miles and the hike out will be shorter at around 6.5. Total trip around 15 miles. According to the topo there will be steeper elevation changes than the first trip.

Because of the rain and snow we had, FDR removed the ban on fires, but just know that there is a possibility of having no fire. There are several water sources all along this trail and one right by our campsite.

Come join us for round 2 of Pine Mountain!! Whoohoo!
