Itinerary:

From Oconee State Park we'll journey down over 600 feet beside the Upper Whitewater Falls to an enjoyable hike towards the Lower Whitewater Falls in NC.

http://www.foothillstrail.org/index.php?page=trail-overview

This is an intermediate in & out hike - about 10 miles total. Not a lot of elevation change except the .6 miles at the beginning & end.

We will start at the beautiful Upper Whitewater Falls overlook. This is one of the highest waterfalls in the East. We then begin a steep descent to the Whitewater River. This is approx. 600 feet in .6 miles. (Remember you have to come back up.) We then take a steel bridge across Whitewater River. After that there are a series of ladder bridges, streams, & boulders as the trail follows the river. This part of the trail has very interesting terrain, but not a lot of elevation change. We'll end in approx. 5 miles at the Lower Falls Overlook which is equally as pretty as the upper falls. There we'll have lunch on the viewing platform. We may decide  to take some spur trails, if time & energy permit.

Please be aware of the possibility of weather conditions in the region.  We will attempt to do the hike in MOST conditions, and will make a final decision on the hike early Friday AM.
