This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary.


We will start the hike at Track Rock gap and hike up to Brasstown Bald.  The first 1.5 miles to the Buzzards Roost Ridge is a steep 1800 ft elevation gain. Next we pass Chimneytop Mountain, gaining another 788 ft elevation to reach Brasstown Bald.  We will have lunch at Brasstown Bald, then return back to Track Rock gap.

This hike is approximately 12 miles round trip and a total ascent of approximately 4000'.  We will be hiking at a moderate pace to slow on incline but faster pace on return.  If you are looking for a fast paced fitness hike, this is not the hike for you.  Though we are going to be taking it easy on the steep inclines, please be aware that you still need to be in excellent shape to attempt this hike.  If you have not completed any D5 and D4 hikes recently, the trip leaders will contact you to determine your hiking experience and reserve the right to remove any registrants that they feel may not be able to keep pace with the group.

Windward Parkway, Alpharetta, GA to: Trackrock Gap Rd, Blairsville, GA

Directions to Track Rock Gap (Arkaquah Trailhead): From the Park & Ride we will go north on Georgia 400 to Dahlonega. Turn left onto US-19/GA-60. Continue on US Hwy 19 North past  Vogel State Park, then take a right on State Road 180 East. Stay on 180 for 2.4 miles, turn left at Town Creek School Rd and after 2 miles turn right on Trackrock Church Rd. Take another right onto Trackrock Gap Rd. The parking lot at the  trailhead is on the left

Carpool Cost: Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $62.00 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile. The total amount should be divided by the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances.
