Itinerary:

Visited by travelers from all over the world, Stone Mountain is one of THE best spots for sunset viewing in the city of Atlanta. Sunset on Sunday March 2 is 6:35 p.m., so we will take our time to enjoy a leisurely walk along the nature trail before we hike to the top of Stone Mountain. We will avoid taking the heavily used walk-up trail and, instead, take a side trail through the woods up to the summit.

We will meet at 4:30 near the restrooms by Confederate Hall for introductions and then head down the the RR tracks to the Nature Trail. After an easy trip around the Nature Trail, we will return to our starting point for a quick water break. We will hike to the top via an alternative route through the woods and then spend some time at the top taking in the view of the city and watching the sunset. This hike is suitable for beginners and those who wish to enjoy the great views from the top of Stone Mountain.

The hike will be approximately 3.5 miles and will involve some steep sections so please bring appropriate footwear. As it will be getting dark towards the end of the hike, please bring a small headlamp or flashlight for the descent back to the parking lot.

If you do not have an annual parking pass, there is a $10.00 entrance fee to park inside the park. Free parking is available at Stone Mountain Village. You will need to give yourself extra time to walk down East Mountain Street to the West Entrance of the park.

Sturdy hike shoes with good tread

Small flashlight or head lamp

Directions To Confederate Hall Parking Lot:

To the main entrance- From I-285 take U.S. Hwy 78 East (Snellville/Athens) exit. Travel about 7 miles and take Exit 8, the Stone Mountain Park Main Entrance. After entering the main entrance, proceed straight ahead. The road will fork at about 1 mile - stay to the right. Continue to follow the road for another mile. Confederate Hall will be on your left. We will meet outside the restrooms at the start of the walk up trail.
