Itinerary:

Attention:

This trip has been changed to a day hike.

Please note the following changes:

Everyone needs to pack a daypack. The Daypack should include: Rain Jacket - Headlamp with good batteries - 3 liters of water - (Kelly please bring your med kit) 2 easy meals, snacks.

We will be doing approx 10 miles on this trip. The harder section (8 miles) has a trail, gps used as back-up, this trail though is NOT maintained and will have lots of deadfall and be very steep at places. This upgrades this trip to a D6 as we have to hike everything in 1 day. Note extra gear in dapack in case trip keeps us longer.

You must be in very good physical shape to do this trip. We will be traveling with the above mentioned gear and traveling quick. We won't be running or anything like that but an unmaintained trail will drastically slow us down. We need to keep the pace up to complete the task at hand. Unmaintained trails also take much more energy to complete, please pack high energy foods & snacks. Also if you know you tire quickly with obstacles please do not sign up for this trail.

This is not a "walking" hike

Below is the original info, we are basically combining everything below into 1 day

Another peakbagging trip towards the Beyond 6000 goal.

On this trip we will knock out 4 peaks on our little jaunt.

We will leave Atlanta and travel to the Browning Knob Overlook along the Blue Ridge Parkway.

The first part of our trip is a day hike as we set out Southwest owards the first of our peaks, Yellow Face (6,032'). There are some smaller ups and downs here and it is only 2/3 mile to reach this peak. After checking out the view (if there is one) we will return to where the cars are parked and head North.

Next we set off north along the road to the Waterrock Knob parking are and trail head. Once again we reach our next summit after only a short hike of 1/2 mile. From here we leave the tourists behind and head into the deep woods.

From here we are "Off Trail". There is no well marked trail or even a trail on any of the maps. From here we will bushwack using a GPS and some luck.
Setting of to the east we will traverse a smaller peak, Browning Knob, on the way to our 3rd 6ker - Mt Lyn Lowry (6,240') Mt Lyn Lowery is approximately 2 miles from where we left the vehicles.

Our final stop is Plott Balsam (6,088') another 2 miles from Mt. Lyn Lowry. The NE side of the mtn is private property but we do not need to hike on this side to achive the summit. After attaining the summit we will head back down and find a nice camping spot.

We will return by bushwacking back the way we came to the cars at Browning Knob Overlook and the return home to Atlanta.

This trip is rated a D5 because most of the hiking will be difficult as we are bushwacking. If you have never bushwacked it is MUCH more difficult than hiking along a maintained trail. last weekend we hiked at 2.6 mph uphill with full packs. 2 months ago it took us 2 hours to travel 1 mile bushwacking along a riverbank with steep sides.

There are NO Water Sources along this trail and you will need to carry ALL your water for BOTH Days.
