Itinerary:

IMPORTANT!  If you wish to participate in this event you must (on SAT APRIL 19 or ASAP thereafter) FORMALLY REGISTER YOURSELF via the AtlantaRow.org WEBSITE and personally fill out the Rowing Club's online form.  As I discuss below we suggest that you register for the 1:30 PM time slot - otherwise you'll be crewing with random people from the general public.  Click on the following link (as early as 12:01 AM on April 19th) to access the Rowing Club's NLTR registration webpage:  http://www.atlantarow.org/2013/11/29/national-learn-to-row-day/

PLEASE SIGN UP also for our AOC "INFORMAL INTEREST LIST"
by clicking, etc. at the base of this article.  As emphasized above, to actually participate you must also FORMALLY REGISTER via AtlantaRow.org (beginning Sat AM Apr 19th).  By registering for their 1:30 PM time slot and arriving by 1:00 you can likely participate as a member of an AOC "crew."  Each crew will have an experienced Atlanta Rowing Club instructor plus six assigned rowers (a.k.a. "oarsmen & oarswomen").

"NATIONAL LEARN TO ROW DAY" in a NUTSHELL:  Twelve of us from the Atlanta Outdoor Club greatly enjoyed getting to "crew together" in this excellent free event last year.  "NLTR Day" is an opportunity for members of the general public to get an idea of what rowing is all about and to learn the basics of this exciting sport.  Our special thanks to Tory Vornholt, who is active in both the ARC and the AOC, for advising us again this year about how to register and participate!

MORE NLTR DETAILS from the ATLANTA ROWING CLUB WEBSITE:   We invite you to experience the joy of rowing!  On NLTR Day we'll open our doors to non-members and you can get an idea of what rowing is all about in just 2 or 3 hours.  If you'd like to participate you must register online individually (via the above-linked AtlantaRow.org NLTR-Day webpage).  Please meet us promptly (30 minutes prior to your registered time) at the large light-green Atlanta Rowing Club boat house. (See easy directions below.)  We'll begin with brief instructions in the basics of rowing and practice on rowing machines. Then it's out to the river where you and your assigned crew will learn how to row together on the water. Our experienced coaches will guide you through every step of the way."  This convenient wide portion of the Chattahoochee River where we row is called "Bull Sluice Lake" and there is hardly any current in the direction of Morgan Falls Dam which is about 3 miles downstream (SW) of the boathouse.  Click here for a 3-minute video clip of one of our previous “NLTR Day” free clinics: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAvK-6Hd-p8

Required Items to Bring:

- Wear comfortable Lightweight Clothes. A short-sleeved shirt and a tight-fitting cap with a bill or brim are normally appropriate at this time of year. Avoid "baggy" garments.  "Spandex" shorts - if you have a pair - would be a good idea.

- Wear comfortable Shoes that you can slip out of at the dock and consider bringing an extra pair of Socks.

- Sunscreen and Sunglasses.

- A bottle or two of Water.

Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.

How to Get There:
Event Directions:

EASY DIRECTIONS from the GA-400/I-285 INTERCHANGE to the ATLANTA ROWING CLUB MAIN BOATHOUSE (For a zoomable map & aerial view of our precise meeting spot click on the square green and blue "Location Icon" near the top of this article.)

1. From the GA-400/ I-285 Interchange take GA-400 North about 5 miles, get off at Exit #6 "Northridge Rd," and loop rightward over the GA-400 bridge.
2. As you near the traffic light that's just beyond the bridge bear Right (northward) onto Dunwoody Place and take it 1.3 miles to its end at the busy traffic light at GA-9.
3. Turn Right onto GA-9 North and take it just 0.6 mile to the traffic light at Azalea Drive (just past the Chattahoochee River bridge).
4. Turn Left onto Azalea Drive, go just 0.6 mile and notice the traffic light and crosswalk over Azalea Drive.  The Atlanta Rowing Club's main boathouse where we meet is the light green and white building to the RIGHT of this traffic light and slightly up the hill
. Do not be confused by the smaller boathouse on the "river" side of Azalea drive or by the boats you may see on that side of the road.
5.  Free parking is normally available in the large "Azalea Park" lot beyond the boathouse on the left "river" side of Azalea Drive, and if those spaces are all filled it's OK to park along the shoulder of the road near that lot.
6. Our AOC "participation subgroup" will gather and sign up for our specific "crews" between 1:00 and 1:15 PM on the upper deck of their main boathouse. (The steps are near the end of the white-marked crosswalk over Azalea Drive.)
