Note: This is an "EXPLORATORY" trip. This means that there are parts of this trip, or perhaps the whole trip, that is new to your Trip Leader(s). However, they are confident that this will not be an issue.
This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary.

Itinerary:

Have you been on the Kennesaw Hikes where you go over the mountain and back, or over and around??? Often we turn around at Burnt Hickory Road, but there are lots of miles of trail farther South.  Let's check out the trails between Burnt Hickory Road and the Dallas Highway.

We'll meet at the Visitors Center on Stilesboro Road to do group introductions and head up the mountain at 8AM (plan to meet at 7:45 incase you have to park in the overflow lot on Old US 41). In this stretch we'll cross over Kennesaw Mountain, Little Kennesaw and Pigeon Hill. We can take a short break and regroup at the Burnt Hickory Road crossing.

From here we'll continue as a group South and keep to the right where we should pass the Hardage Saw Mill site and turn around at the next road crossing the Dallas Highway. Keep to the right on our way back to the visitors center. On the return trip around the mountain we'll pass several civil war era homestead sites, the New Salem Baptist Church historical site and the site of a CCC camp operated between 1938 and 1942.

We should be returning to the visitors center around 12pm. This assumes the group is able to complete the 10 miles at a moderate pace of 2.5 mi/hr. If a 10 mile hike sounds like a bit more than you may be comfortable with, please refrain from signing up and keep an eye out for the "Slow & Steady Over Kennesaw Mountain" hikes that are offered.

I've never hiked the trails between Burnt Hickory and the Dallas Highway, but I'm confident we will be able to find our way.
