Itinerary:

Class IV+—Difficult—Whitewater paddling experience preferred.

It’s about time for the AOC to meet our Nations’ “Wild and Scenic River” AGAIN!! Join me for a little camping and some big whitewater rafting!!

We’ll start the weekend camping Friday night at Tallulah Gorge State Park up near Tallulah Falls, one of the most spectacular canyons in the eastern U.S

Bright and early (yes, 7am) we will begin our full day, 6 hour rafting trip, barreling down the Chattooga River, Section IV (NOC provides lunch by the river). Section IVs awe-inspiring views and exhilarating rapids will thrill and rejuvenate adventurous adults seeking the highest white-knuckle adventure and is as close to big whitewater as I’ve gotten to this close to home. As the water level rises, so does the difficulty and the thrill factor of this truly amazing river--so pray for MORE RAIN!!

Section IV showcases demanding Class IV and IV+ rapids, including the Five Class IV+ and V Rapids of the Five Falls, culminating in the awesome Class V drop Soc Em Dog! Immortalized in the film Deliverance (you know the tune…)

Section IV of the Chattooga is the Classic Southeastern Whitewater Experience against which all others are measured!

After a day of rafting, we will make it back to camp for an evening full of dinner & celebration—toasting our day on the river! As I always say, “A bad day on the river, unless you die, is better than a good day at work!!” Of course we’ll wake up Sunday, have breakfast, and the rest of the day is yours. If I get enough requests, we can get a permit and plan on hiking down in the Gorge Sunday late morning/afternoon.

NOC provides helmets, paddles, pfd’s, paddling jackets, and lunch, but if you have your own gear, feel free to bring it. We probably won’t need cold water gear, so I would think whitewater shorts/swimwear (watch-out in big WW) & water shoes w/ankle strap would suffice.

Tallulah's Pioneer campsite has a pit toilet and picnic tables, but no running water. I'm trying to get Tugaloo because they have water, but right now they're booked. However, the NOC will have showers for after a long day on the river—you will need it!! This will be similar to what we think of as Pioneer Camping, so not REALLY roughing it, but out in the elements. Not sure what the weather will be like, but NOC GOES RAIN OR SHINE AND WE WILL TOO!!
