Note: This is an "EXPLORATORY" trip. This means that there are parts of this trip, or perhaps the whole trip, that is new to your Trip Leader(s). However, they are confident that this will not be an issue.
This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary.
This is 20+ mile hike with a total elevation gain of over 5000 ft.. We will hike both Blood Mountain and Coosa Back Country loops as well as summt 3 peaks, Blood, Slaughter, and Coosa. The group will be expected to maintain a moderate to fast pace.
We begin our journey at the Byron Reece Trail connecting to the AT and head to Blood Mountain (Elv. gain 1500 ft.). From Blood Mountain we will descend to the junction of the AT and Duncan Ridge trail. We will take Duncan Ridge to the Coosa Back Country Loop. Once we connect with the Coosa Loop we will continue clockwise and head up to the Top of Slaughter Mountain (Elv. gain 300 ft.) .
Continue over Slaughter then begin a rapid decent of 860 Ft. to Wolfpen Gap. From Wolfpen Gap we climb to the top of Coosa Bald (Elv.gain 880 ft.).
From there, the trail descends 2,100 feet over the next 3.6 miles until we reach a gradual climb around the contours of Frady Mountain and Sheriff Knob (Elv. gain 700 ft.). Next we descend to Vogel State Park and continue on the Coosa loop with a climb to the intersection of Coosa Loop and Duncan Ridge (Elv. gain 1700 ft.), were we first entered the loop.
Turn left onto the Duncan Ridge Trail towards Blood Mountain and the AT. Follow the trail till we reach the 3 way intersect (Elv. gain 200 ft.), turn right onto the Appalachian Trail. Continue on reaching the Freeman Trail intersection. The Freeman Trail meets the AT and Byron Reeece trail.
Continue on the Byron Reece Trail to the trail head.
We have not done this complete route in the past. With that said it shouldn't take us longer than 10 hours to complete with stops for lunch/snack and breaks. But with a fast group we may be much quicker. No rush here, enjoy the journey.
If the group is interested we’ll head back down to Dahlonega to replenish some lost calories.
*Please note that this event may go longer depending on the pace of the group and stops. Also, the duration does not include travel time.
|How to Get There:|
From the Mansell Park and Ride north on GA 400. Continue on US 19/GA 60 once GA 400 ends. Take bypass through Dahlongea. Stay on US 19. Once you reach Walasi-Yi Inn you will be a quarter of a mile from the Byron Herbert Reece parking lot. The road into the lot in one way. If you have reached Vogel State Park you have gone too far.

|Carpool Cost:||Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $54.00 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances.|
This is a strenuous hike covering over 20 miles with significant elevation gain. You will be expected to be physically fit to handle a long day of hiking. If you do not have any recent D5 or above experience plan on hearing from the Trip Leader to verify your ability to complete this event.
The plan will be for the group to be within a reasonable distance (ear shot) of each other. We do not plan on losing anyone.
For the safety of the group, the Trip Leader reserves the right to remove anyone from this hike that they feel is unable to keep up with the group or complete the hike.
