Itinerary:

This in-and-out hike starts at Unicoi Gap on Hwy 75, north of Helen. From the trailhead we ascend 1100 ft. over 1.3 miles to the top of Rocky Mt, descend 800 ft. over 1.3 miles to Indian Grave Gap, ascend 1300 ft. over 2.4 miles to the summit of Tray Mt.  We'll descend down to the shelter past Tray for lunch and then go back over both mountains to the cars below at Unicoi Gap. With a total elevation gain of 3200 ft, this hike is intended for those who are truly ready to do a D5 in the mountains. We will making stops as needed, but will travel at a moderate pace.

We'll meet early at the carpool at the Indian Trail park-and-ride. We'll make a pitstop for bathrooms in Cleveland.  If there is interest, we can have dinner at a great pizza place just outside of Helen.

If the weather forecast calls for a greater than 50% chance of thunderstorms, I will reschedule the hike.

I'll be contacting anyone who has not done a D5-level hike to determine if this hike is suitable for you.


Required Items to Bring:

3-4 bottles of water, more, if you drink a lot
broken-in hiking boots
sunscreen
shoes (and a bag in which to place your dirty hiking boots)

Carpool Cost: Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $60.00 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile. The total amount should be divided by the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances.
