Itinerary:
We'll begin by hiking at a moderate pace up the main Mount Yonah trail (approx. 1500 ft elevation gain in around 2.5 miles). As we near the top, we will veer off the main trail and hike along the side of the exposed rock face. While it is safe, if you have an extreme fear of heights, this may not be the best hike for you.

Hopefully we will be able to meet up with the AOC rock climbing group midway through this event and watch them climb a bit, interact, etc. If there is spare equipment, some of us might even be able to do some climbing. If conditions are dry enough, we will take another route from here up around the backside of the mountain and then back down the main trail to our cars.

And after the hike, if there is sufficient interest and appetite, we will stop at a local pizza place for dinner.

The total distance for this hike should be from about 6-8 miles. Total ascent will be around 2000 feet. It does involve some steep sections and rocky terrain, and should prove to be moderately strenuous. There won't be any rock climbing required, but there is a bit of light rock scrambing.

PLEASE NOTE:
  • This is not a Beginner hike due to elevation gain and rugged terrain.
  • Hiking poles or a hiking stick are highly recommended for the steep and rocky sections.
  • There are restrooms (pit toilets) at the trailhead and also conveniently located 2/3 up the main trail.
  • The last half mile of our drive to the trailhead is on a gravel road.
