Itinerary:

A new, extended route on the GA triple crown version... and a great calory burner for the post-Thanksgiving days!

This is a little more than the usual Coosa/Slaughter/Blood combination! We'll start at Bryon Reece Parking, hiking up the AT to the summit of Blood Mtn. After a long and steep descent to Vogel State Park, we then hop on the Coosa Backcountry Loop. Along the way we'll summit Coosa Bald (4280') and then Slaughter Mountain (4338').

Rather than returning to Blood Mtn, we will turn right at the AT (again) and follow the trail to Lake Winfield Scott. After a snack break, head back along the Slaughter Creek Trail to the summit of Blood Mountain (4458').

This a solid 20+ miler with over 6000 ft elevation gain.

This is NOT a beginners hike, so please do not sign up unless you are in excellent physical condition. If you haven't done a D6 or D7 hike with me before, this will not be for you. I reserve the right to remove folks from the sign up list that have not hiked with me before.

As many of you know, the Coosa Backcountry Loop is a strenuous trail. Be sure you are up to a 20+ mile hike with some extended climbs at a steady pace and only short stops for water. We might start/finish the hike in the dark, so please bring your headlamp!

Required Items to Bring:
  • WATER & GATORADE
  • winter gear (layers are the secret of staying warm and comfi on the trail). Bring a medium-weight down jacket for breaks)
  • yak tracks might be helpful for icy sections
  • enough food to keep your energy level up and a dinner "snack"
  • headlamp
  • hiking boots
