Guess what Saturday June 7th is? On June 7, 2008, the American Hiking Society will celebrate the 16th Annual National Trails Day. The slogan for National Trails Day 2008, Join Us on the Trail, is an open invitation to all Americans to get outside and experience everything the great outdoors has to offer. Trails do not just appear for our enjoyment. It takes many hours of planning and labor to develop them and much more time annually to maintain them. National Trails Day®, the only nationwide celebration of trails, brings awareness to trails and thanks many people and partners for their support and hard work, including volunteers, land agencies, and outdoor minded businesses. It is also a day to give people an opportunity to give something back for the many joys and benefits trails offer. You are invited to celebrate National Trails Day in North Georgia by joining a U.S. Forest Service sponsored event on the Jacks River Trail in the Cohutta Wilderness. Forest Rangers and trail volunteers will be joining forces to provide some much needed TLC (trail loving care) to this popular wilderness trail. No experience needed, but please bring your own work gloves, lunch and water, and a daypack to carry it in. We'll have some river crossings on the Jacks River trail, so please be prepared for that. Bring water shoes or wear your Keens/Tevas. Volunteers will be involved in trail trimming, slingblading, blowdown removal, waterbar construction and maintenance, campsite rehabilitation, and litter pick-up on trails located on the Conasauga Ranger District We should be wrapping things up around 3 pm and be back to carpool by 5 pm. If you meet there and need to leave sooner than 3 pm, you can do that. We are doing this for fun and to also give something back to our trails. | |||||||
