Itinerary: | |||||||
This is a nice casual hike that will be about 2.5 miles long. It's a good event for those new to hiking or just getting back into it. We will start at the Red trail, hike both sides of the sluice, check out the New Manchester mill ruins, then hike the shorter portion of the white trail (used to be the blue nature trail) back to the visitor's center. The visitor's center is a LEED certified building with interesting historical objects on exhibit, plus a gift shop. Sweetwater State Conservation Park is one of the treasures to be found near metro Atlanta. This park offers beauty and wildlife viewing for visitors all year long in addition to some Civil War history. The park sets atop the Brevard Fault which makes the terrain steeper than the surrounding areas. The creek itself offers many scenic spots as it tumbles over the shoals and the natural dam nearby.
