This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary.

Itinerary:

The weather is supposed to be sunny and clear on Sunday; a nice day to have a cool, crisp hike to the top of Yonah. At 3166' Mount Yonah has great views over the surrounding area.

Our route will follow the main trail up and then take a side trail to the bottom of the cliffs. From the bottom of the cliffs we will take a different (non-routine) approach to the top. We will continue along the base of the cliffs, wrapping around to the south side of the mountain, and then make our way to the top. The last half mile of this route will most likely involve some off-trail hiking and minor rock scrambling.

When we reach the top of Yonah, we should have a little time to wander around the top, go to a couple different overlooks, get some photos on the famous overhang, and eat lunch at the main overlook. I expect will be at the lunch spot about 2 PM, so we'll probably have a very short snack break on the way up. We will hike at a moderate pace with with some stops for photo opportunities.

The first mile of the route down will also follow a non-routine route which will take us to an overlook on the northeast side of the mountain (facing Helen). There may be a short distance of off-trail on this portion as well. Then we'll head down the standard route from there.

The hike to the top will have 1,400 - 1,500 feet of ascent in addition to the off-trail and rock scrambling, so it should be considered a lower end D4 hike - please ensure you are suited for such a hike.

This hike is listed as exploratory, because there are a few sections of this particular route I haven't taken. No worries... we won't get lost. However, in those sections I'm not absolutely certain how much will be off-trail, and/or rock scrambling - so just be prepared for that. (we won't be dong any rock climbing though!)

The high temperature at Yonah on Sunday should be in the low-50's, and possibly be in low 40's when we're at the summit. You should dress in layers to ensure you remain comfortable throughout that range of temperatures.
