Write Up:

What a glorious day for a walk in the woods.  Yes it was cold, yes we had snow but what a great hike for a Friday morning.  Our caravan arrived at the Three Forks trailhead intact after a beautiful drive in on FS 58.  And then the fun began.  As we started gearing up, the snow started,  We headed south on the Appalachian Trail towards Springer.  We had several creek crossing which were a little tricky with all the recent rains but all was well.  We briefly visited the Stover Creek shelter were a couple of thru hikers were finishing up breakfast.

Its definitely thru hiker season as we saw between 15-20 thrus who are just beginning their northbound trek. Sadly we also saw one thru who after hiking the approach trail and just 4 miles of the AT has called it quits when arriving at Three Forks.

After reaching the Springer parking lot, we changed over to the Benton Mackaye trail for the homeward leg back to Three Forks.  The snow really picked up and it was truly a winter wonderland.  Once we arrived back at our cars, we took a short break to eat before heading up to Long Creek falls.  The water was running heavy from all the rains and we enjoyed seeing the falls before starting back to the cars.  Along the way back, we diverted off the trail to try to view several smaller cascades on Long Creek before we arrived back at Three Forks and the end of our hike.  We totaled about 9.5 miles and almost 2600 feet of elevation gain.  ~  Holt
