We had a good group of 14 hikers today for the Double Spring Knob hike, # 9 on the list of GA's Highest Peaks.  The morning started out a bit chilly and rainy, but the rain softened soon after we started out.  A foggy mist cloaked the fall colors as it clung to the sides of the mountains.  The twisted trees bent inwards forming a cave like canopy of wild forms above our heads as we continued up the craggy mountainside.

There were leaves of gold, red, and variations in between along the forest floor.   The fallen leaves concealed rocky ground along parts of the trail.  The recent rains provided some slippery slopes as well.  We pushed forward and reached the highest point of the mountain.  Everyone made really good time as the group kept a continuous steady pace along the changing terrain.
As we made our way down the mountains we noticed a cool breeze had dissipated the fogginess.  Taking a side trail on the way back proved quite rewarding as we emerged from the woods onto an overlook.  The view was great from this vantage point.  We could clearly see several of the neighboring mountains and view the fall colors that had been previously veiled by the rainy mists.  We paused, enjoyed the scenery and took several group photos.  Then we continued back towards our starting point.

It was a good day with fun people.  And a good feeling to hike one of Georgia's highest peaks!

Thanks to Ray for the event photos!
