All of the elements came together to make this a great hiking experience. Good weather, blue skies, a great trail, two summits and a great group of hikers made this trip around the Coosa Backcountry Trail a memorable experience for all. We hit the trail full of energy hiking in the counter-clockwise direction. This direction gave everyone a good hour or so to warm up. Next we hit the hills for a good long climb up to the top of Coosa Bald, our first summit of the day. After our lunch break we hit the trail again for the second half of our day. We dropped down to Wolf Pen Gap and after regrouping we took on a tough climb to the top of the ridge. Next came a little side trip to the top of the isolated and seldom summitted Slaughter Mountain. I think every one appreciated this remote mountain summit. At this point, the trip leader thrilled everyone with stories of the great Coosa Cheifdom and the explorations of Hernando Desoto. Then the long descent back to Vogel State Park commenced. Near the end, several hikers decided that a good foot soak in the cold rushing creek was just what was needed. It was refreshing. Afterward the group drove into Dahlonega for a great Mexican dinner. What a day! What a hike! What a great group!
