Write Up:
After getting a late start on the trail due to some icy detours in the Toccoa area and finding ample parking due to the normal parking being frozen over, we began our 3 miles up, 3 miles down. As stated in the event description, this was a D3 hike up a dirt forest road. It really wasn't supposed to be a scenic or too strenuous hike but with the recent heavy snow this hike became a D3.5 and the dirt was pretty much covered up by a nice layer of snow. The snow really did make this a nicer 'site' hike then it should have been. So after a decent pace up the mountain on a beautiful Saturday, we reached the top.... probably not in the same amount of time the Paratroopers of WWII did, but we made it. The top of Currahee is littered with graffiti and large radio towers, but if you duck behind the southeast tower, you will find steps that lead to a wonderful overlook of the Toccoa area. We stopped here for lunch and then began our slick trek back down Currahee. Some of the ladies opted to slide down the trail on rear ends, which provide the group with some amusement. All-in-all, good group, fun hike, and we all learned a little bit too.
